I always find it interesting how people that work in the fitness industry find their passion. My interest in fitness started when I was first introduced to triathlons in 2002. I had no clue what I was doing, but I was excited to find something that would allow me to compete and swim as an adult. After high school, I received my culinary arts degree, which is where I found my passion for cooking, working in bakeries, and kitchens for a few years. Ever since then, I have been fascinated by the idea of cooking good, healthy, satisfying food that fuels the body and help it work optimally. That was my jumping point.
Before receiving my degree in exercise science from Bastyr University, I was required to do an internship. I did my internship at Columbia Athletic Club in Juanita Bay and loved what I could do, so I stayed. I started off training a few clients added some small group classes, and started triathlon coaching for people looking at getting into triathlons.
Since March of 2008, I have had the pleasure of working with so many different types of people. People dealing with an injury, wanting to get stronger, wanting to lose weight, pregnant women, women returning to exercise after having a child, wanting to do an Ironman, grandparents wanting to be mobile enough to get on the ground with their grandchildren, the list continues. At this point, I have worked with all stages of life, from age nine to age eighty-nine. The commonality with all my clients is that they are ready to take their lives back and get better than where they started. We all know that life gets crazy, and it is so easy to forget that you are important, and you deserve your own time to take care of yourself.
I believe in meeting my clients where they are at, so before working with someone, we have a conversation about goals, health history, limitations, and what you are looking for. I do not believe in giving out clients cookie-cutter programs that are not tailored to their specific needs and goals. The frequency of training sessions depends on the person from three times per week to once a month to get a new routine.
I believe in always learning. The fitness industry is continuously evolving, and I do my best to stay up with current trends and evolutions. It is not very often that you won't find me working on another certification, and I choose my certifications based on the people I am training and improving my own health. Below I have my major certifications listed, but I have also been certified by TRX, Trigger Point, Gray Institute, Brookbush Institute, Ironman coaching, and I am currently working on my Girls Gone Strong certification. I also love going to workshops and conferences, and I can not wait to go to another IDEA conference when mass gatherings are safe again.
Endurance Sports Nutrition Coach
As a mother of a high energy daughter, I occupy many roles. In terms of my own fitness and things I love, I always have some goal I am striving to achieve because that keeps me going. I love participating in endurance sports, whether it be an Ironman triathlon, an ultra marathon, or one of my newest found sport, SwimRun. If you are curious about any of those endeavors, go check out my blog, where I will periodically post race reports and other random fitness bits of my life.
